University Policy UW-02-07
It is the policy of Michigan State University that Notices of Trespass are issued and enforced to protect persons and property, and to prevent interference with University operations, on all property owned or leased by Michigan State University within the State of Michigan. Notices of Trespass may be issued for an entire campus or specific location(s).
In accordance with this policy, the President of MSU authorizes the Chief of Police and Executive Director of Public Safety and subordinate officers (the “Police”) to issue and enforce Notices of Trespass. Appeals of Notices of Trespass shall be reviewed by the Secretary in accordance with this policy.
This policy shall be administered in conjunction with ordinances and policies related to freedom of speech, assembly, and expression.
SUBMIT REQUESTFactors
Police may use their professional discretion to issue a Notice of Trespass if there is probable cause to believe an individual committed a crime against persons or property at MSU.

A Notice of Trespass must identify the person’s full name, date of birth, and known contact information; the date of the incident for which the notice is issued; the location; and factors to justify the issuance.

If an individual who is issued a Notice of Trespass refuses to depart, or later re-enters, MSU property, the individual is in violation of the Michigan Trespass Statute, and DPPS may take appropriate legal action.
